Somali National Army (SNA) forces have recaptured Al-Shabaab’s last bastion in Middle Shabelle.
SNA forces announced the recapture of Runirgod, the only major town in the region that had been in the hands of the militant group.
A military operation by the SNA troops on Thursday night successfully ensured that Runirgod would no longer be in the hands of the militants.
Abdullahi Ali Anod, the official spokesperson of the federal Ministry of Defense, confirmed the latest development to the members of the press on Friday.
According to Anod, government troops entered villages around the town on Thursday morning.
The military then engaged Al-Shabaab fighters in a fierce fight that lasted several hours. Anod added that the military killed several militants, who included five foreign fighters.
