SoDMA Organizes Humanitarian Agencies to Strengthen Drought Response

Mogadishu, Somalia – The head of Somalia’s Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA), Mahamuud Moallim Abdulle, held an important strategic meeting today with the Humanitarian Country Team (HCT) and local aid groups to discuss the severe drought impacting all parts of Somalia.

The high-level function emphasized the urgent need for a unified and swift nationwide approach to the worsening climate crisis. Commissioner Abdulle stressed that the drought has reached a critical point, seriously threatening livelihoods and water resources throughout the country.

In his remarks, the Commissioner shared the significant concern voiced by President Dr. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre about the humanitarian situation. He restated the leadership’s instructions for all government departments to fully collaborate with SoDMA, confirming its authority as the official entity in charge of coordinating aid and disaster response nationwide.

“We must work together seamlessly to save lives,” Commissioner Abdulle declared.

He appealed to all humanitarian partners to synchronize their activities with SoDMA’s updated guidelines and protocols to guarantee an efficient and effective aid distribution process.

The Commissioner also tackled the difficulties caused by reduced international donor funding, noting that the cutback in financial backing has seriously hampered ongoing drought relief measures.

To address this, he advocated for:

– Immediate and comprehensive planning with all participants involved.

– Consistent funding from both local and international sources.

– Strategic realignment of assistance programs to focus on the most at-risk communities.

The meeting ended with general agreement on the importance of a collective effort to gather resources and execute quick actions before conditions worsen.
