Over 2,000 Families in Jalalaqsi Receive Second Drought Relief from SoDMA

JALALAQSI, HirShabelle – The Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA), in collaboration with the HirShabelle Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, has effectively carried out the second phase of its emergency relief initiative in the Jalalaqsi district, focusing on communities severely affected by the persistent drought.

This latest distribution benefited a total of 2,009 households, delivering vital food assistance and necessary supplies when local resources have been considerably diminished. Recipients conveyed their deep appreciation to SoDMA and its partners, highlighting that the support arrived during a critical moment as drought conditions continue to worsen.

The relief operation receives funding from the African Development Bank (AfDB) via the African Risk Capacity (ARC), a specialized African Union agency assisting member states in preparing for and responding to extreme weather phenomena. This partnership underscores the significance of international cooperation in delivering timely, life-saving aid to the most isolated and affected populations.

Nuur Dheere, the Jalalaqsi District Commissioner, commended SoDMA for the efficient and transparent execution of the aid distribution. He lauded the agency’s commitment to assisting the most vulnerable groups and stressed the beneficial effect this support will have on improving food security in the district.

SoDMA reiterated its dedication to extending these relief operations to other affected areas, maintaining close collaboration with both domestic and international partners to reduce the humanitarian consequences of the climate emergency.
