Somali Government is Ready to Take over Security Responsibilities from ATMIS

The Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) is ready to take over security responsibilities from the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS).

The government issued a joint statement with ATMIS on Thursday expressing willingness to assume responsibility for the security of the East African nation.

ATMIS forces are expected to reduce in the country when the first batch of 2,000 withdraw at the end of June 2023.

They should be completely leaving the country by December 31, 2023.

Somalia also expressed a debt of gratitude to not only ATMIS but also the Troops Contributing Countries for the role they played in securing the country for over a decade.

Over time, ATMIS has been training security agents in Somalia to prepare them for the task ahead.
