Somali Leaders Agree on 30 Percent Women Representation in Parliament

Federal Government of Somalia and Federal Member States leaders met in Mogadishu yesterday and agreed on a 30 percent women representation in parliament.

For years, women in Somalia have been pushing for the 30% representation in parliament.

Women’s groups in the country have rallied around this issue. Several human rights organizations have also lent their voice to the increased quota for women.

As of last year, parliamentarians had yet to pass the electoral law that provides for 30% quota for women in the East African nation.

However, the meeting between FGS and FMS leaders in Mogadishu on Thursday guaranteed women the quota they have craved for years.

Parliamentary polls are scheduled for December 1-10 for the Upper House and December 10-27 for the Lower House.
