Mogadishu, Somalia – Dozens of Somali migrants have been left abandoned in Libya after being deserted by smugglers, according to reports emerging from the North African country.
Among the stranded is Nor Cadow from Baidoa, who spoke to journalists about the group’s worsening humanitarian situation.
“We are suffering terribly. We have no food, shelter, or medical help,” he said.
The migrants, many of whom were attempting to reach Europe, now find themselves trapped in unsafe conditions, vulnerable to abuse, extortion, and violence.
They are urgently appealing to the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) and international organizations for immediate rescue and repatriation assistance.
Human rights groups have consistently warned about the dangers facing migrants in Libya, especially in areas controlled by armed groups and smugglers.
Somali authorities have not yet issued an official response to the call for help.
