Somali MP Accuses President of Selling Citizenship, Looting Visa Revenues

Mogadishu, Somalia – Dr. Abdillahi Hashi Abib, a member of Somalia’s Parliamentary Committee on Foreign Affairs and declared candidate for the 2026 presidency, has launched a scathing attack on President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, accusing him of insulting the Somali diaspora while presiding over the sale of national identity documents and the diversion of visa revenues into offshore accounts.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Dr. Abib condemned the president’s recent remarks questioning the Somali identity of dual nationals, calling the comments “unconstitutional and contemptuous.” He pointed to Article 8 of the Provisional Constitution, which guarantees equal rights and citizenship to all Somalis, including those with dual nationality.

At the same time, he alleged that Somali passports and national IDs are being sold illegally to foreigners with no Somali heritage for between $9,000 and $20,000.

“This is the most grotesque form of corruption—trafficking in the very identity of the Somali nation,” he said.

Dr. Abib also accused the government of running a fraudulent E-Visa scheme that forces Somali diaspora citizens to pay $65 on arrival, with revenues allegedly funneled to Galaxy, a Nairobi-registered company linked to presidential advisors and relatives. He argued that the arrangement violates Somalia’s Public Finance Management Act, which requires all state revenues to be deposited in the Treasury Single Account at the Central Bank.

“With just seven months left in office, the President will be judged by history as the man who mocked his own diaspora while selling Somali citizenship abroad,” Dr. Abib warned.
