Somali President Played Central Role in Lifting Arms Embargo, Declares ATMIS Chief

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud played a critical role in convincing the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to lift the arms embargo imposed on Somalia for the last 31 years.

Souef Mohamed El-Amine said this while congratulating Somalia on this historic feat.

El-Amine, the Head of the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS), issued a statement on the historic feat.

He said that the lifting of the arms embargo would not have been possible without President Mohamud’s “outstanding leadership.”

El-Amine expressed hope that the upcoming Somali Security Conference would be a successful next step for the East African nation.
