MOGADISHU: The Minister of Internal Security for the Federal Government of Somalia, H.E. Abdullahi Sheikh Ismail Fartaag, held high-level talks with the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Somalia, Wang Yu, in the capital to enhance bilateral relations and advance mutual security and institutional development goals.
The security-focused discussions centered heavily on securing long-term backing for Somalia’s ongoing security sector advancement, specialized professional training initiatives for law enforcement personnel, and expanding collaborative efforts against explosive hazards, such as landmines and unexploded ordnance (UXO) that continue to threaten civilian populations. Both parties renewed their diplomatic dedication to advancing the strategic Somalia-China alliance to ensure enduring peace, internal stability, and national security.
Institutional Reforms and Strategic Demining Support
The meeting between Minister Fartaag and Ambassador Wang underscores a structured effort by the federal administration to diversify its international security partnerships and enhance state capacity. The Ministry of Internal Security and Chinese representatives have previously prioritized enhanced security cooperation, demining assistance, and civilian protection initiatives as critical pillars for stabilizing regions recovered from insurgent forces.
By securing Chinese technical assistance for counter-explosive hazards, the ministry aims to accelerate stabilization programs in central and southern regions. These initiatives run parallel to broader state-building frameworks, including institutional dialogue and diplomatic policy coordination. Somalia and China also recently established a Diplomatic Research Center for Strategic Cooperation to enhance diplomatic capacity and foster higher-level policy dialogue between the two nations.
Consolidating National Sovereignty
The strengthening defense and internal security ties between Mogadishu and Beijing reflect a shared political alignment regarding territorial integrity and state authority. This security collaboration follows clear diplomatic assurances from the highest levels of the federal government. President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud previously received Ambassador Wang Yu at Villa Somalia to solidify political ties, during which Somalia explicitly reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to the One-China policy.
As the Ministry of Internal Security continues to implement its post-insurgency stabilization plans, international cooperation on professional training and demining remains vital to restoring full civil administration and securing major supply routes across the country.
