Algiers, Algeria – State Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Ali Mohamed Omar, attended a regional conference in Algiers on Sunday with other African leaders to promote criminalization of colonial-era abuses and advocate for reparations.
The two-day meeting, from Nov. 30 to Dec. 1, gathered nations that suffered colonial rule to foster global recognition of historical violations and establish ways to address their ongoing effects.
Delegates are set to approve a draft “Algiers Declaration,” which details primary recommendations for recording colonial crimes and intensifying demands for redress.
The final text will go before African Union heads of state at their February 2026 summit, potentially serving as a continental benchmark.
During the event, Omar discussed bilateral cooperation and mutual interests with Algeria’s Secretary of State for African Affairs, Salma Mansouri.
