Somalia Condemns Drone Attack on Saudi Arabia

MOGADISHU: The Federal Government of Somalia has strongly condemned the attempted drone attack that targeted the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, describing the act as a serious violation of the Kingdom’s sovereignty and a direct threat to regional peace and stability. The attack was intercepted and destroyed after entering Saudi airspace, according to official statements.

In a press release issued on Tuesday, Somalia reaffirmed its full solidarity with the brotherly Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and expressed support for all measures aimed at safeguarding its security, stability, and territorial integrity. The Federal Republic of Somalia stressed that attacks targeting the security of states and critical infrastructure undermine collective regional stability and risk further escalation in an already fragile region. The government called for restraint, respect for international law, and renewed efforts to preserve security and stability across the region.

The condemnation builds on the strong and multifaceted partnership between Mogadishu and Riyadh. Somalia and Saudi Arabia formalised a significant military cooperation agreement earlier this year, covering joint initiatives to safeguard Red Sea maritime passages against piracy and geopolitical threats. A landmark maritime cooperation agreement focused on port development and transport has also been signed, aligning with Somalia’s comprehensive blue economy strategy. Saudi Arabia remains one of Somalia’s most important partners in the Gulf, with cooperation encompassing humanitarian aid, investment, security coordination, and livestock trade.

The attempted drone attack comes at a time of heightened regional tensions. Somalia recently welcomed the US‑Iran ceasefire agreement and praised Saudi Arabia’s mediation efforts. Mogadishu also backed a tripartite security arrangement with Saudi Arabia and Egypt to enhance Red Sea security. The Federal Government reiterated its commitment to working with international partners to uphold stability and counter threats to peace.
