Mogadishu, Somalia – The Minister of Family and Human Rights Development of the Federal Government of Somalia, Amb. Khadiija Mohamed Al-Makhzoumi, officially launched the national “16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence” campaign in Mogadishu on Monday. The initiative will span the country over the next 16 days, emphasizing the protection and empowerment of Somali women and girls.
The launch event was attended by the ministry’s Director-General, Mohamed Bashir Omar, representatives from women’s organizations, civil society groups, and international partners.
In her address, the minister stressed the government’s steadfast commitment to eradicating violence against women and bolstering nationwide initiatives to protect their rights and dignity. She pointed to the ministry’s ongoing efforts to formulate and advance vital legal reforms for safeguarding Somali women, including:
The Sexual Offences Bill, designed to tackle rape and sexual violence.
The Anti-FGM Bill, aimed at banning and criminalizing Female Genital Mutilation.
The Ministry of Women and Human Rights Development urged all societal sectors to engage in the national campaign, emphasizing that joint efforts are essential to guarantee the safety, dignity, and welfare of Somali women.
