Opposition parties in Somalia have threatened to hold parallel elections if the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) continues to ignore the issues they have raised.
A few weeks ago, the parties held a consultative conference in Mogadishu, which was attended by 14 presidential candidates seeking to unseat President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo.
After the Mogadishu conference, they agreed to form the Council of Presidential Candidates Union.
On December 5, the Council issued a statement expressing displeasure at the decision by the Federal Electoral Commission to appoint new office bearers.
The electoral commission elected Mohamed Hassan as its Chairperson and Mowlid Matan as the Deputy Chairperson.
The Council of Presidential Candidates Union rejected the new office bearers after terming the electoral body “unconstitutional.”
In the statement issued on Saturday, the opposition council announced the formation of a 28-member Election Salvation Commission.
They said that the Election Salvation Commission would organize polls if the government continues to ignore their call for establishing an all-inclusive electoral commission.
