Somalia’s Public Works Ministry and IOM Enhance Cooperation on Reconstruction and Resettlement

MOGADISHU: The Minister of Public Works, Reconstruction and Housing, Ayub Ismail Yusuf, convened a strategic meeting with the leadership of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Somalia on May 6, 2026. The high-level discussion centered on accelerating infrastructure projects and enhancing the national framework for the resettlement of internally displaced persons (IDPs).

Minister Yusuf announced that the Federal Government has formally designated specific land tracts for IDP resettlement, with essential services integrated into the planning. A key component of this strategy involves the establishment of vocational training centers designed to provide sustainable livelihoods and economic resilience for displaced populations. The Federal Government has previously overseen resettlement efforts in the Lower Shabelle region, where displaced individuals are being transitioned into permanent dwellings.

The IOM delegation specifically highlighted the ongoing impact of specialized programs, including Daris-Wacan, Saameynta, and Resilience, which remain pivotal to the state’s broader reconstruction objectives. The Federal Government has continued to align its development initiatives with international partners to address the needs of Somalia’s internally displaced population.

Manuel Marques Pereira, Chief of Mission for IOM Somalia, reaffirmed the organization’s full commitment to supporting the Ministry’s urban development and social welfare initiatives. The Ministry has been actively engaged in advancing infrastructure projects across the country. Minister Yusuf previously led a delegation to Dhuusamareeb, the administrative capital of Galmudug State, where he laid the foundation stone for a strategic road linking Dhuusamareeb and Cadaado, a project expected to enhance regional connectivity and economic integration.

The collaboration between the Ministry of Public Works and IOM underscores the government’s commitment to addressing the needs of internally displaced persons while simultaneously advancing national reconstruction and long-term development. The meeting concluded with both parties agreeing to continue their close coordination on resettlement initiatives and infrastructure development across Somalia.
