Somalia is interested in a slow withdrawal of the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) troops from the country.
Reuters reported seeing documents showing that Somalia would like ATMIS to pull out its troops at a much slower pace.
The Reuters report states that the government of Somalia is worried about a security vacuum that could emerge when ATMIS leaves the country fast.
ATMIS is scheduled to completely withdraw its troops from Somalia by December 31, 2024.
Reuters reported seeing a letter dated last month in which Somalia wrote to the African Union Peace and Security Council (AUPSC).
In the letter, Somalia wants the June withdrawal of 4,000 ATMIS troops to be postponed to September this year.
