Mogadishu, Somalia – May 14, 2025 — The Federal Government of Somalia has welcomed the announcement by the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) regarding its decision to dissolve the organization, lay down arms, and bring an end to decades of armed conflict.
In an official statement released on Tuesday, Somali authorities commended the move as a “positive and courageous step” toward peace and stability in the region. The government emphasized the importance of dialogue over violence in resolving long-standing political and ethnic grievances.
“Somalia stands in solidarity with all nations seeking peaceful solutions to internal conflicts,” the statement read. “We welcome the PKK’s decision and hope it paves the way for sustainable peace and reconciliation in areas affected by the group’s activities.”
The PKK, designated a terrorist organization by Turkey, the United States, and the European Union, has waged an insurgency against the Turkish state for over four decades. Its decision to dissolve follows renewed diplomatic efforts and a shifting regional security landscape.
Somalia, which has itself faced protracted internal conflict and continues to battle violent extremism, expressed hope that the PKK’s move would inspire other armed groups to pursue non-violent paths toward their political goals.
The Somali government also reiterated its commitment to international peace and security, urging all parties in the region to prioritize reconciliation and respect for sovereignty.
