Somalia’s Lower House and Senate Appoint Two Interim Speakers

The House of the People (Lower House) and Senate (Upper House) have appointed two interim speakers.

Abdisalan Haji Dhabancad, a Member of Parliament (MP), would take over as the Speaker of the Lower House.

Meanwhile, Senator Mohamed Ali is to serve as the Speaker of the Upper House.

The two new speakers are the oldest elected MPs in the recently concluded Lower House and Senate elections around the country.

They are expected to serve until the two chambers of the federal parliament hold substantive elections for the speaker’s seat.

The election of the speakers is the next important issue before the two chambers.

MPs and Senators would only elect the country’s new President once elected speakers are in office.
