Somalia’s Upper House has approved the decision by the National Independent Electoral Commission (NIEC) to hire a new commissioner.
Sadia Shurie becomes the newest commissioner to join NIEC.
Consequently, she becomes one of the three commissioners currently serving NIEC, which is preparing for Somalia’s upcoming elections in late 2020 and early 2021.
Before her appointment as commissioner, Shurie had been working as an advisor to the polls commission.
Therefore, she is not entirely a new face in the affairs of the commission.
The decision by the Upper House to approve her membership is a huge gain to the pursuit of gender balance in the country’s top constitutional institutions.
