Somaliland President Travels to UAE for Working Visit

HARGEISA — The President of Somaliland, Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi “Irro”, departed for the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Tuesday, leading a high-level delegation to attend the annual World Governments Summit in Dubai.

This working visit, initiated by a formal invitation from the UAE government, carries significant diplomatic weight as the President joins representatives from over 130 countries and numerous international organizations.

Strategic Engagement at Global Summit

During the summit, President Irro is expected to present a statement highlighting Somaliland’s achievements in state-building, democratic processes, and stability relative to the broader Horn of Africa region.

Officials view Somaliland’s participation alongside recognized governments as a critical step in its strategy to combat political isolation and assert de facto statehood on global platforms.

Strengthening Ties with Abu Dhabi

In addition to the multilateral summit, the delegation will engage in high-level bilateral discussions in Abu Dhabi. Talks are set to focus on trade relations and investment opportunities, domains where the UAE remains a pivotal partner.

The Emirati logistics giant DP World has invested approximately $442 million in the development of the Berbera Port, a project central to Somaliland’s economic roadmap.

Speculation on Israel Follow-up

The trip occurs during a diplomatically delicate period. According to sources cited by regional media, President Irro may proceed to Israel following his engagements in the UAE, though no official confirmation has been released.

This speculation follows Somaliland’s announcement in December 2025 regarding a diplomatic breakthrough with Tel Aviv. Israel has previously expressed interest in broadening cooperation regarding security and logistics in the Red Sea corridor.
