Somaliland Vows to Proceed with Ethiopia Deal Despite Opposition from Somalia

Somaliland has vowed not to give up on its agreement with Ethiopia despite the torrent of opposition from Somalia.

Somaliland signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Ethiopia that allows the latter to accord it the recognition it seeks as an independent state.

The deal, which was signed on January 1, 2024, has attracted a barrage of opposition from Somalia.

Somalia still considers Somaliland part of its territory.

This is despite the fact that Somaliland broke out from Somalia in 1991 during the Civil War.

Somaliland’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Isse Kayd Mohamud avers that Somalia has no authority to interfere with its MoU with Ethiopia.

“Somaliland will explore any opportunity that benefits its quest for international recognition,” added Dr. Mohamud.
