The Swedish Ambassador to Somalia has outlined two key prerequisites for successfully conducting direct elections in Somalia.
Ambassador Joachim Waern called for the establishment of a credible timeline in a manner that is not only realistic but also transparent and beneficial for the entire electoral process.
Secondly, he stressed the importance of addressing disagreements with all stakeholders, including Puntland and Jubbaland states, to ensure a consensus-driven approach.
In an exclusive interview with local media in Mogadishu, the Ambassador reiterated Sweden’s support for President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s initiative for direct elections.
However, the diplomat emphasized the importance of inclusivity and consensus, cautioning against unilateral decisions by either the federal government or regional administrations.
This aligns with international calls for collaborative governance in Somalia to promote stability and democratic progress.
