The United Nations has demanded increased protection for civilians in Somalia.
That call comes in the wake of the displacement of more than 56,000 people in Gedo since early February.
Escalating violence in the country puts more civilians in grave dangers.
Initial reports indicate that increased violence in Gedo, Jubaland State has caused the displacement of up to 9,000 households.
Adam Abdelmoula, the Humanitarian Coordinator in Somalia, says more efforts need to be directed towards minimizing harm to civilians in the region.
He said, “Homes, health centers, and schools have suffered irreparable damages and destruction. All parties to the conflict must do what they can to protect civilians.”
The escalation in violence threatens civilian assets too.
Apart from the reports coming out from Gedo, Somalia’s years of conflicts have seen more than 2.6 million people displaced around the country.
In December 2020, nearly 90 civilians lost their lives and more than 150 others suffered injuries when a truck exploded in Mogadishu.
