During the World Humanitarian Day event in Mogadishu, the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM) reiterated the important role played by aid workers in the country.
UNSOM said that it’s important to recognize and appreciate the dedication and sacrifices of humanitarians in Somalia and around the globe.
UNSOM cited the speech by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in which he emphasized that while celebrating these aid workers is vital, it is not enough.
He calls for increased efforts to protect them and ensure that international humanitarian law is respected.
This reminder underlines the need for stronger measures to safeguard those who risk their lives to provide essential assistance in conflict zones and other challenging environments.
The World Humanitarian Day is celebrated on August 20 around the globe.
