US Embassy Congratulates Brave Somali Journalists for Working Despite Threats

The United States Embassy in Mogadishu has congratulated Somali journalists who work “bravely” in the face of mounting threats.

On Monday, November 2, the US Embassy sent out a communiqué saluting the “brave Somali journalists for working in the face of threats.”

The Embassy commended the journalists while celebrating the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists.

Somalia is one of the worst places for journalists to work.

Authorities in the country are notorious for intimidating journalists.

Reporters are also victims of state-sponsored violence and illegal detention.

The United States Embassy urged authorities in the East African nation to respect freedom of expression.

Further, the Embassy also encouraged the government to support the establishment of a free and independent media.
