US Reaffirms “One Somalia” Policy Amid Recognition Row; Delivers Heavy Weapons to SNA

WASHINGTON/MOGADISHU — The United States has moved to clarify its diplomatic position regarding the Horn of Africa while simultaneously bolstering military support for the Federal Government’s counter-terrorism operations.

Following Israel‘s controversial December 26 announcement recognizing Somaliland as an independent state, Washington reaffirmed on Monday that its policy toward Somalia remains unchanged.

Diplomatic Stance

A State Department spokesperson confirmed to the BBC that the U.S. continues to support Somalia’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity. However, the official noted that Washington maintains a “good working relationship” with the Somaliland administration, particularly regarding shared security and economic interests, though this cooperation does not constitute formal recognition.

The clarification follows an emergency session of the United Nations Security Council requested by Mogadishu. During the meeting, 14 of the 15 council members rejected Israel’s decision, aligning with the positions of the European Union, African Union, and the Arab League.

Arms Delivery to Middle Shabelle

Underscoring its commitment to the security partnership with Mogadishu, the U.S. military on Tuesday transported a significant cache of weapons, including heavy artillery, to the Somali National Army (SNA) in the Middle Shabelle region.

Officials stated that this delivery demonstrates ongoing support for partners fighting against terrorist groups that endanger regional stability.

“The Somali National Armed Forces have reiterated to terrorists that they cannot evade the grasp of Somali Security Forces,” a military statement read, pledging to continue operations until stability is established throughout the country.
