DUBAI — Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi “Irro” has participated in the World Governments Summit in Dubai for the second consecutive year, following a formal invitation from the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
Mr. Irro arrived in the Emirates on Monday, with state media confirming his scheduled meetings with senior officials. His attendance comes at a time of increasingly strained relations between Abu Dhabi and the Federal Government of Somalia.
Escalating Tensions
The visit occurs against a backdrop of diplomatic deterioration. Last month, authorities in Mogadishu announced the termination of all agreements with Abu Dhabi, accusing the Gulf state of violating Somalia’s unity and sovereignty by supporting Somaliland’s longstanding pursuit of international recognition.
According to analysts, granting President Irro a front-row position among global leaders at the summit is likely to be interpreted in Mogadishu as a deliberate gesture by the UAE to elevate the profile of the self-declared republic.
Impact on Relations
Somaliland, which proclaimed independence in 1991, remains unrecognized internationally but functions as a sovereign state.
Observers anticipate that the warm reception afforded to Irro will further strain the relationship between Somalia and the UAE, which had previously cultivated close ties under the administration of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud prior to the recent diplomatic fallout.
