The United States government has pledged to support Somalia in its efforts to stop illegal fishing on its waters.
On November 4, the US Embassy in Somalia released a communiqué promising to lend Somalia the support it needs in this regard.
The Embassy noted that demand for seafood has grown substantially around the world.
For this reason, it pledged to help the Federal Government of Somalia to combat “illegal, unprotected, and unregulated” fishing.
The Embassy noted that the fish stocks need adequate protection to prevent their depletion.
Illegal fishing has been rampant in Somalia, which has suffered decades of dysfunctional government and insecurity.
