Energy and Water Coordination Conference Concludes in Dhusamareb

HUSAMAREEB — The Federal Government of Somalia has concluded the Federal and Federal Member States Coordination Conference on Energy and Water Resources in Dhusamareeb.

The two-day event, held from January 31 to February 1, 2026, was officially closed by the Minister of Energy and Water Resources, H.E. Abdullahi Bidhaan Warsame, alongside state-level counterparts.

Unified National Strategy

The conference focused on enhancing policy coordination between federal and state authorities to create a unified national strategy for addressing drought, improving reliable energy access, and expanding water services.

During the proceedings, the Ministry highlighted key ongoing initiatives, including:

  • The Somalia Electricity Recovery Project (ILAYS)

  • The Jowhar Water Development Project

  • The Barwaaqo+ Project (focused on community cooperation and reservoirs)

  • The Abaartire Program (aimed at long-term drought solutions)

Energy Ministers from Galmudug, South West State, Hirshabelle, Puntland, and Jubbaland attended the summit. They reaffirmed their dedication to the enhanced collaboration, while stressing the importance of implementing development projects equitably across all regions.

At the closing ceremony, Minister Abdullahi Bidhaan Warsame emphasized the Ministry’s commitment to implementing projects without political bias, stating that providing affordable electricity and safe water remains a top priority.

Inspection of Solar Facilities

Following the conference, Minister Warsame conducted an inspection visit on Monday to healthcare and educational institutions in Dhusamareeb that have received free electrical services under the ILAYS project.

Accompanied by the State Minister and Deputy Minister, the delegation visited the Galmudug Ministry of Energy building, the Dhusamareeb General Hospital, and a local school.

Hospital officials reported that the newly installed power supply has significantly enhanced healthcare delivery and enabled the facility to reduce substantial expenses previously allocated to electricity generation.

Minister Bidhaan emphasized the critical need to maintain the solar energy systems to guarantee the long-term continuity of the service, noting that the ILAYS initiative prioritizes social service institutions to support sustainable development nationwide.
