Iraq Condemns Recent Assassination Attempt Against Somali President

The Iraqi Foreign Ministry has condemned the recent assassination attempt on Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, expressing solidarity with Somalia in combating terrorism and violence that threaten its stability.

In a statement reported by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), the ministry emphasized the need for strengthened international efforts against terrorism, the promotion of peace in the region, and enhanced cooperation to address shared security challenges.

Iraq has consistently condemned acts of terrorism and assassination attempts targeting state leaders.

For instance, in November 2021, Iraqi President Barham Salih condemned the failed assassination attempt against Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi, describing it as a “dangerous violation and heinous crime against Iraq.”

Similarly, in January 2024, the Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs strongly denounced an airstrike targeting a headquarters in Baghdad, resulting in the deaths of two leaders from the Hashd al-Shaabi Nujaba movement.

The ministry labeled the attack as a “dangerous escalation” and a direct infringement on Iraq’s sovereignty, asserting Iraq’s right to take decisive action to safeguard its territory and security forces.

These consistent stances highlight Iraq’s commitment to opposing terrorism and supporting regional stability.
