Somali Scholars Rally Behind National Drought Response

MOGADISHU, Somalia – The Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) Commissioner, Mahamuud Moallim Abdulle, held an important meeting today with leaders from the Umbrella of Somali Islamic Scholars to discuss the worsening drought crisis affecting the nation.

The distinguished religious delegation was headed by the Umbrella’s Chairman, Sheikh Adan Moallim Sugow, and included Deputy Chairman Sheikh Bashir Ahmed Salad and Sheikh Mohamud Abdulbaari.

The strategic dialogue sought to utilize the influential position of the country’s religious leaders to lessen the drought’s effects.

Conversations revolved around how the Ulama could take a more active role in increasing public awareness, promoting social unity, and organizing community-based humanitarian actions.

Commissioner Abdulle encouraged the scholars to lead a nationwide initiative of “spiritual and social mobilization.” He specifically requested they utilize their influence to motivate the Somali people to support one another during this challenging period.

Additionally, considering the severity of the water shortage impacting extensive areas of the country, the Commissioner appealed to the scholars to organize and guide nationwide prayers for rain, seeking divine intervention for the population’s relief.

In response, Sheikh Sugow confirmed the unwavering dedication of Somali Islamic Scholars to the humanitarian effort. He mentioned that the religious community is prepared to make additional efforts in educating the public and will work diligently to ensure emergency assistance reaches those in the most dire situations.

The Chairman highlighted that Somali scholars have consistently been at the forefront of rescue operations and crisis prevention, and they remain willing to cooperate closely with government institutions to preserve lives.
