SoDMA Launches Food Aid Distribution for Vulnerable Families in Afmadow

AFMADOW – The Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) has launched the first phase of a food aid distribution in the Afmadow district of the Lower Jubba region, targeting thousands of vulnerable families affected by drought and harsh living conditions.

The relief operation, which began today, aims to mitigate the impact of the prolonged drought that has devastated communities across the southern regions. Beneficiaries include households identified as most in need of urgent support, many of whom have been displaced or lost their livelihoods due to the severe dry conditions.

SoDMA’s Expanding Humanitarian Operations

The Afmadow distribution is part of a broader pattern of humanitarian interventions by SoDMA, which has been working to reach vulnerable communities across multiple regions. The agency recently launched a similar food aid distribution in Caabudwaaq district of the Galgadud region, as part of ongoing efforts to mitigate the impact of drought and difficult living conditions affecting communities across central Somalia.

SoDMA has also implemented a three-month emergency food distribution program in Jalalaqsi and Balcad, aimed at easing hunger in flood- and drought-affected districts. The agency has delivered lifesaving aid to over 148,000 families across the country, providing essential relief assistance and coordinating the distribution of sacrificial meat during the Eid al-Adha holiday.

Humanitarian Context in Jubaland

The Afmadow district, located approximately 105 kilometres north of Kismayo, the administrative capital of the Jubaland regional state, has faced significant humanitarian challenges. The district has been impacted by both drought and flooding in recent years. Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre previously visited flood victims in Afmadow, assuring residents of the government’s support during emergencies.

SoDMA has maintained a consistent presence in Jubaland, dispatching essential aid supplies to Luq district in the Gedo region and delivering 4,000 tons of food aid to Kismayo, the administrative capital of Jubaland.

Broader Drought and Humanitarian Crisis

Somalia continues to face significant humanitarian challenges, with drought and displacement affecting millions of people across the country. SoDMA Commissioner Mahamuud Moallim Abdulle has convened high-level consultative forums with humanitarian groups from Islamic nations to confront the nation’s severe and mounting drought crisis, focusing on water trucking, food security, healthcare services, and shelter for displaced populations.

The Chinese government has responded to Somalia’s humanitarian appeal with a $1 million contribution to enhance the nation’s capabilities in addressing the drought crisis, with the funds presented during a diplomatic visit to SoDMA.

The food aid distribution in Afmadow reflects the Federal Government’s ongoing commitment to addressing humanitarian needs in underserved communities. SoDMA has reaffirmed that it will continue its humanitarian relief operations in the Jubaland region and across other regions of Somalia.

Residents of the Afmadow district have expressed gratitude for the assistance provided by SoDMA, with the agency stating that the food assistance program will be expanded to reach drought-affected communities across most regions of the country.
