KISMAYO – The Danab Commandos of the Somali National Army, specifically the 162nd Unit, have conducted destruction operations in the areas of Lafa-gari, Xabala Afwaax and other locations within the Lower Jubba region, military officials have confirmed.
The operations, which were carried out in a planned manner, resulted in the destruction of hideouts and caves that served as shelters for Al-Shabaab militants. Military commanders leading the operations presented images of the tunnel networks and shelters used by the militants and their leaders who were present in the rugged terrain where the operations were conducted by the Somali National Army forces.
Coordinated Offensive in Jubaland
The operation forms part of broader military efforts in Somalia’s southern Jubaland region, where regional and national forces have been carrying out coordinated offensives targeting militant bases and logistical hubs. Military operations against Al-Shabaab have intensified in recent days, with commanders stating that the operations would continue until the fighters are cleared from the remaining areas where they still have a presence in Jubaland.
The campaign builds on previous successful advances in the region. The Somali National Army, in coordination with Jubbaland Security Forces, launched a major military operation spanning areas in Lower and Middle Juba regions, targeting Al-Shabaab positions in strategic locations.
Danab’s Role in Southern Offensive
The operation features the elite U.S.-trained Danab commandos of the SNA, supported by Jubbaland’s regional special forces, who have spearheaded the advance, capturing key positions and securing major access routes. In November 2025, Danab commandos seized key positions in Lower Jubba in one of the most consequential military operations mounted in the region in recent years, capturing the Araare Bridge and securing major access roads leading directly toward Jamame, a district long considered a fortified sanctuary for Al-Shabaab.
Jubbaland regional forces, reinforced by the SNA, have made significant strides against Al-Shabaab, reclaiming territories beyond Kismayo and tightening the squeeze on the militants’ once-firm strongholds. Recent advances have brought troops to Jamaame, a key Al-Shabaab hub in Lower Jubba notorious for orchestrating attacks on civilians and security personnel across Somalia.
Previous Operations and Leadership Commendation
The Danab forces have maintained consistent pressure on Al-Shabaab across southern Somalia. In a separate coordinated effort, the elite Danab Special Forces executed a planned operation near Jamaame in the Lower Juba region, leading to the deaths of 14 militants.
Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre previously issued a strong commendation to the Danab Special Forces and Jubbaland regional security forces following a successful military operation in the Lower Juba region, lauding the combat preparedness of the joint forces who effectively neutralised a major assault by Al-Shabaab militants on the strategically important coastal town of Kudhaa.
Way Forward
The latest operation in Lafa-gari, Xabala Afwaax and surrounding areas reflects the ongoing commitment of Somali security forces to dismantle Al-Shabaab’s infrastructure and deny the group safe havens in the region. Military officials have indicated that operations will continue until all remaining militant hideouts are cleared and security is fully restored across Lower Jubba.
