CAABUDWAQ – The Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) has distributed emergency food aid to vulnerable families in the Caabudwaaq district of the Galgadud region, as part of ongoing efforts to mitigate the impact of drought and difficult living conditions affecting communities across central Somalia.
The distribution, which marks the first phase of a broader relief effort, was officially launched at a ceremony attended by Member of Parliament Raysal Qorane, SoDMA Commissioner Mahamud Moalim Abdulle, Galmudug State Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management Abdirahman Makaawi, and local district officials. The aid packages were provided to households identified as most in need of urgent support.
SoDMA has previously conducted food aid distributions in Galgadud districts, with officials disbursing essential foodstuffs to vulnerable households affected by flooding and other emergencies.
Expanding Humanitarian Operations Across Somalia
The distribution in Caabudwaaq is part of a larger pattern of humanitarian interventions by SoDMA, which has been working to reach vulnerable communities across multiple regions. The agency recently launched a major food relief drive in Jalalaqsi and Balcad, implementing a three-month emergency food distribution program aimed at easing hunger in flood- and drought-affected districts.
SoDMA has delivered lifesaving aid to over 148,000 families across the country, providing essential relief assistance throughout June and coordinating the distribution of sacrificial meat to more than 148,040 families during the Eid al-Adha holiday.
Commissioner’s Engagement with Local Communities
SoDMA Commissioner Mahamud Moalim Abdulle has been actively engaged in assessing humanitarian needs across the country. The Commissioner recently led a humanitarian assessment mission to Abudwaq district, accompanied by Galmudug State Minister of Humanitarian Affairs Abdirahman Makaawi, to evaluate the humanitarian situation and identify the priority needs of local communities.
The agency has also launched relief efforts for displaced families in Beledhawo, distributing emergency aid packages including food, clean drinking water, temporary shelter materials, and basic medical supplies to communities uprooted by violence.
Drought and Humanitarian Challenges
Somalia continues to face significant humanitarian challenges, with drought and displacement affecting millions of people across the country. SoDMA has engaged with Islamic aid organizations to confront the nation’s severe drought crisis, focusing on water trucking to parched areas, food security provisions for undernourished populations, and coordinated humanitarian response.
The Chinese government has responded to Somalia’s humanitarian appeal with a $1 million contribution to enhance the nation’s capabilities in addressing the drought crisis, with the funds presented during a diplomatic visit to SoDMA.

The food aid distribution in Caabudwaaq reflects the Federal Government’s ongoing commitment to addressing humanitarian needs in underserved regions. As drought conditions and displacement continue to affect communities across central and southern Somalia, the expansion of relief operations and coordination with international partners will remain essential to mitigating the impact of the crisis.
