Somali lawmakers have hit out at Speaker Sheikh Adan Mohamed Nur Madobe for announcing that Ms. Marwa Abdi Bashir Hagi withdrew from the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) presidential election.
Speaker Madobe wrote a letter dated October 24 to the IPU announcing Ms. Hagi’s decision to pull out of the race.
However, he now faces backlash from a number of local Members of Parliament (MPs).
According to the legislators, Speaker Madobe has no authority to make such a decision or announcement.
In their view, Ms. Hagi opted to vie on her own volition. They added that the Lower House never appointed her to vie.
