MOGADISHU: The Federal Republic of Somalia has reaffirmed its steadfast commitment to national unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, while firmly rejecting any unilateral actions or measures that undermine the legal and political status of the Somali state. In an official statement, the government condemned any moves that contravene international legitimacy and the relevant resolutions of regional and international organizations.
The government explicitly rejected any unilateral action that undermines the legitimacy and existence of Somali statehood or violates international laws as well as resolutions issued by regional and international bodies. Officials emphasized that preserving the unity, sovereignty, territorial integrity, and independence of the country remains the highest priority for the Federal Republic of Somalia.
Somalia Strongly Condemns “Embassy” Move In Jerusalem
Accordingly, the Federal Republic of Somalia strongly condemned the move by the northwestern administration of Somalia, referred to as the northern western region, to establish a purported “embassy” in the city of Jerusalem. The government clarified that this action is legally void and carries no legal effect whatsoever, describing it as an unacceptable, provocative act that offends the sentiments and positions of the Arab and Islamic worlds.
“This action is legally void and carries no legal effect, constituting an unacceptable provocation to the Arab and Islamic world,” the statement read. Somalia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs reiterated that the move does not reflect the will of the Somali people and urged all international partners to disregard any claims made by the self-declared representation.
The Federal Government of Somalia has consistently supported the rights of the Palestinian people and the status of Jerusalem as a final-status issue to be resolved through international law and United Nations resolutions. Somalia has repeatedly voiced its support for a two-state solution with East Jerusalem as the capital of Palestine, making the so-called “embassy” move a direct contradiction of the country’s long-standing foreign policy.
In recent months, Somalia has also been actively pushing back against other threats to its territorial integrity. The government declared a recent memorandum of understanding by Ethiopia as null and void, vowing to defend Somali land and sea borders. The latest condemnation of the northwestern region’s Jerusalem move follows the same firm stance against any actions that fragment Somali sovereignty or align with foreign agendas that harm the unity of the Somali people.
The Federal Republic of Somalia called on all regional and international bodies, including the Arab League, the African Union, and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), to reject this provocative act. The government also urged the international community to continue recognizing the single, undivided sovereignty of Somalia over all its territory as defined by its 1960 borders.
