Somalia, Türkiye Ink Deal to Boost Fishing Sector

Somalia’s Minister of Fisheries and Blue Economy, Ahmed Hasan Aden, has signed a landmark agreement with Türkiye’s OYAK group to revitalize the country’s fishing industry and harness the potential of the blue economy.

The deal, hailed as a transformative step, aims to attract significant foreign investment, create employment opportunities for Somali youth, and clamp down on illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing in Somali waters.

According to an official statement, the agreement is also expected to enhance Somalia’s access to international markets and improve revenue generation from marine resources—one of the country’s most underutilized economic sectors.

This partnership aligns with Somalia’s broader vision to sustainably develop its maritime resources and strengthen its sovereignty over its exclusive economic zone (EEZ).
