Special Envoy Swan Says Al-Shabaab Caused 708 Casualties in Somalia in 2021

James Swan, the Special Representative for the UN Secretary General in Somalia, has said that Al-Shabaab caused 708 casualties in Somalia in 2021.

Special Envoy Swan was speaking while addressing the UN Security Council (UNSC) on Thursday, August 12.

He said that UN Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM) had kept a record of all those deaths.

In his briefing, Special Envoy Swan stated that Al-Shabaab militants had killed 321 Somalis and injured 387 others.

Additionally, Swan accused the Al-Qaeda-linked group of sexual violence.

Swan informed the Security Council, which met specifically to discuss Somalia, that Al-Shabaab has committed gross violations against Somali children.
