Taiwan to Fund Somaliland Polls to the Tune of $2 Million

The government of Taiwan has pledged to donate up to US$2 million to fund the implementation of elections in Somaliland.

The breakaway region of Somaliland is scheduled to hold parliamentary and local council elections on May 31, 2021.

Last year, Taiwan set up a Representative Office in Somaliland.

Since then, it has financed various aspects of the democratization process in Somaliland.

A lawmaker in Somaliland’s House of Representatives confirmed this gesture from the Asian nation.

Furthermore, the legislator said that Taiwan would be channeling the funds directly into Somaliland.

Abdikadir Ismail Jirde is the lawmaker who revealed this news to the public.

He made these developments known following a recent high-level meeting held in Hargeisa between Wadani Party officials and ambassadors.

Taiwan’s contribution is similar to the US2 million donated by the United Kingdom and the European Union to fund Somaliland’s polls.
