Precision Airstrike in Aadan Yabaal Kills 11 Khawaarij Leaders, Including Regional Commander

GALKAYO – Defence Minister Ahmed Moallim Fiqi has confirmed that a precision airstrike targeted a meeting of Khawaarij leaders in the Aadan Yabaal district of the Middle Shabelle region, killing 11 militants and wounding four others, including the group’s regional commander, Yusuf Ciise Kaba-kudukade.

The strike, which took place on July 28, targeted a gathering led by Kaba-kudukade, who serves as the Khawaarij commander for the Middle Shabelle region. According to Minister Fiqi, who briefed reporters in Galkayo, the operation was carried out as planned and dealt a significant blow to the group’s leadership structure in the area. Kaba-kudukade, a long-serving militant leader, has been the subject of international sanctions and is listed among key Al-Shabaab figures involved in extortion networks and enforcement operations in areas under the group’s control.

A Tactical Blow to Khawaarij Leadership

The Aadan Yabaal airstrike is the latest in a series of precision operations targeting Khawaarij leadership in the Middle Shabelle region. Local sources reported that the strikes, carried out by Somalia’s international security partners, hit multiple locations in the town, including a compound known as Villa Adan Yabaal, which served as a command and operational facility for the militant group.

The elimination of Kaba-kudukade’s deputies and the wounding of the commander himself represent a significant tactical success for Somali forces and their international partners. The Defence Ministry has previously reported that sustained precision airstrikes have significantly weakened both Al-Shabaab and Daesh networks across the country, with 220 strikes carried out since February 2025, eliminating 868 militants, including 52 senior operatives.

A Targeted Operation

The Aadan Yabaal strike follows a pattern of targeted operations against Khawaarij leadership in the region. NISA has previously eliminated high-ranking Khawaarij commanders in precision overnight operations, disrupting the group’s command and control capabilities. In a separate operation, NISA forces killed 15 Khawaarij militants in a night raid near Mabaax, demonstrating the government’s intensifying campaign against the group.

The Middle Shabelle region has been a focal point of military operations in recent months. Precision airstrikes in the region have killed nearly 30 militants in recent weeks, destroying training camps, logistics hubs, and weapons stockpiles. In February 2026, an airstrike killed 15 Al-Shabaab militants who were planting landmines on a key road in the region.

Kaba-kudukade: A Long-Time Target

Yusuf Ciise Kaba-kudukade has been a prominent figure in the Khawaarij network for over a decade. He has been identified as the group’s leader in the Middle Shabelle region and has been involved in extortion networks, regional administration, and enforcement operations in areas under the group’s control. He was included in a January 2026 sanctions list issued by Somalia’s National Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing Committee, which named individuals accused of financing and administering the militant group’s activities.

The wounding of Kaba-kudukade marks a significant development in the ongoing campaign against the Khawaarij. His removal from the battlefield, even temporarily, is expected to disrupt the group’s operations in the Middle Shabelle region and create opportunities for further military advances.

Way Forward

The Aadan Yabaal airstrike is a tactical victory for Somali forces and their international partners. It demonstrates the growing capability of Somali forces to conduct intelligence-driven operations against a resilient and adaptive enemy. However, the broader challenge remains: whether military pressure alone can break the insurgency, or whether it must be paired with a credible effort to build state institutions, deliver services, and address the grievances that fuel the conflict.

The government has framed these operations as part of a sustained campaign to eliminate the militant threat. Somali security forces, supported by international partners, have intensified operations across southern Somalia, targeting leadership, infrastructure, and territorial holdings of the militant group. But without a comprehensive strategy that includes political engagement, economic development, and community reconciliation, the tactical victories in Aadan Yabaal will remain just that: tactical victories, not strategic solutions.
