Somalia Tightens Border Controls in Major Security Crackdown

Mogadishu, Somalia — Somalia has announced a sweeping security crackdown at all its border points as part of a new initiative to prevent the movement of extremists and transnational crime networks. Under the directive, all foreign entries and exits will now face heightened scrutiny as authorities bolster measures to close any gaps exploited by dangerous actors.

The Ministry of Interior confirmed that security personnel at airports, seaports, and land crossings have been instructed to implement stricter inspection protocols, enhance traveler screenings, and thoroughly check travel documents. The effort aims to intercept suspected militants, illegal arms traffickers, and other individuals linked to destabilizing activities.

The move follows Somalia’s recent security collaboration with the United States and Interpol under the banner of the Immigration and Citizenship Agency (ICA) of Somalia. The partnership, finalized just a few weeks ago, focused on enhancing aviation security and integrating international best practices into Somalia’s border control operations.

“These measures will help protect our citizens and the integrity of Somalia’s borders,” a government spokesperson said on Monday. “We recognize the persistent threat posed by extremist groups and other organized crime networks and will do everything in our power to counter these threats.”

The heightened scrutiny is part of a broader national security reform aimed at fortifying the country against increasing regional instability. Observers say this initiative underscores Somalia’s commitment to improving its security architecture and cooperating with international agencies to bolster peace and stability across the Horn of Africa.
