Somalia Will Have New Currency, Says Central Bank Governor

Somalia is to have new currency in the next few months, according to the Governor of the Central Bank.

Governor Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi issued this statement on December 31.

He was speaking to the state media.

The Central Bank Governor assured the public that the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) would start printing new currency known as Somali Shilin from the coming months.

Governor Abdullahi expressed optimism for Somalia’s economic growth in the coming year.

“We remain optimistic that our country would achieve positive economic growth despite the challenges that COVID-19 has presented,” Governor Abdullahi said.

His immediate predecessor, Abdisalan Omer Hadliye, had indicated that the government had already printed new Somali currency.

In former Central Bank Governor Hadliye’s estimates, a German firm had printed the new currency notes, which were lying idly in a Sudan warehouse.
