Public Urges Somalia’s Constitutional Review Commission to Remember People with Disabilities

Members of the public urged the National Constitutional Review Commission of Somalia to prioritize the rights of people with disabilities.

They gave their views when the commission visited Dhusamareb to collect public views on the constitutional review.

A 73-year old man, Ali Sheikh Rashid, urged the commission to advocate for the special treatment of people living with disabilities.

Rashid is visually impaired.

While giving his views, Rashid said that there is need for increased education and awareness to enable more Somalis to treat people with disabilities respectfully.

Rashid was among 50 people who participated in this week’s public consultations.

Similar consultations have taken place in HirShabelle, Galmudug, and Southwest states.

Somalia’s Ministry of Constitutional Affairs has been in charge of facilitating the consultations that are designed to collect views from the public.
