MOGADISHU – The newly appointed Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism of the Federal Government of Somalia, Abdulfatah Kasim Mohamud, met with the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Somalia, H.E. Wang Yu, at the Chinese Embassy in Mogadishu to discuss strengthening longstanding bilateral relations with a focus on information, media, cultural exchange, and tourism.

Minister Mohamud expressed his appreciation to the Chinese government for its continued support to Somalia and underscored the importance of further expanding bilateral cooperation across multiple sectors, including information sharing, media development, cultural programs, and tourism initiatives[reference:1]. China Reaffirms Commitment to Somalia’s Development
For his part, Ambassador Wang Yu warmly welcomed the newly appointed information minister and commended the longstanding friendship and cooperation between the two countries[reference:3]. The Chinese envoy reaffirmed his government’s commitment to maintaining support for Somalia and deepening collaboration in priority areas such as information exchange, cultural ties, and tourism development, with the aim of reinforcing the strategic partnership between the two nations[reference:4].
The meeting builds upon a series of recent high-level engagements aimed at bolstering cultural diplomacy between Mogadishu and Beijing. In a similar discussion last year, former Minister Daud Aweis Jama and Ambassador Wang reaffirmed their commitment to fostering cultural diplomacy, with particular emphasis on media exchange, artistic collaboration, and preservation of historical archives. The National Theatre of Somalia, originally built by the Chinese government in 1967, has been a recurring focus of bilateral cooperation. In November 2024, Somalia and China signed a memorandum of understanding to modernize media institutions, including repairs to Radio Mogadishu studios and lighting and sound systems at the National Theatre.
Expanding Strategic Partnership Across Sectors
Both sides agreed to accelerate and further advance relations and cooperation between Somalia and China, with the objective of promoting mutual interests and solidifying their strategic partnership[reference:5]. The meeting comes amid heightened diplomatic engagements aimed at building international alliances and strengthening state capacity. Somalia and China recently established a Diplomatic Research Center for Strategic Cooperation within the Diplomatic Institute of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Mogadishu, aimed at advancing bilateral coordination and joint policy development.
Beyond media and culture, bilateral relations have expanded across multiple sectors. In September 2025, Defense Minister Ahmed Moallim Fiqi met with his Chinese counterpart, Admiral Dong Jun, in Beijing, marking the first ministerial-level defense engagement between the two nations in nearly 40 years. The talks focused on training, counterterrorism, peacekeeping, and maritime security. The Somali National University has also forged key academic partnerships with prominent Chinese institutions to expand collaborative research and improve higher education quality.
Deepening Cooperation in Media and Governance
The Ministry of Internal Security recently held extensive talks with Ambassador Wang Yu to discuss enhanced security cooperation, demining assistance, and civilian protection initiatives. On the economic front, China’s historic extension of its zero-tariff policy to African nations is expected to significantly boost Somali export prospects, particularly within the maritime and agricultural sectors.
Somalia and China have also enhanced collaboration on natural resources and technical skills, laying the groundwork for long-term economic development. Earlier meetings between Minister Aweis and Ambassador Wang explored new areas of partnership, including technical training, content exchange, and restoration of national heritage institutions.
The meeting concluded with both sides expressing optimism about the future of Somalia-China relations and reaffirming their commitment to deepening cooperation across all sectors of mutual interest.
