MOGADISHU: The Minister of Internal Security of the Federal Government of Somalia, Abdullahi Sheikh Ismail (Fartaag), has launched a 10-day training program in Mogadishu for instructors of the Somali Police Force. The initiative is aimed at improving the skills and quality of police training across the country, according to an official statement.
Funded by the Government of Japan and held at the General Kaahiye Police Training School, the program is part of a joint initiative involving the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM). It focuses on strengthening police capacity and improving security services. The training will initially concentrate on instructors based in Mogadishu before being gradually expanded to regional states to enhance police effectiveness at regional and district levels.
Minister Fartaag emphasized that improving the professionalism and effectiveness of the police force remains critical to strengthening security and building public trust in state institutions. The program forms part of broader efforts to strengthen Somalia’s security institutions as the government continues reforms aimed at improving law enforcement capabilities and stabilization efforts. Somalia has stepped up international security cooperation in recent years as it works to rebuild national institutions after decades of conflict and as African Union forces gradually transition security responsibilities to Somali authorities.
Japan has been among Somalia’s international partners supporting security sector reform, governance, and stabilization programs through bilateral and multilateral initiatives. The country has previously donated critical equipment to the Somali Police Force Mine Action Unit to strengthen its capacity to detect and neutralize explosive devices. The training program in Mogadishu represents the latest in a series of collaborative efforts to build a professional and capable police force capable of maintaining public order and countering security threats.
