NIEC Releases Official Timeline for Galmudug State Elections

DHUSAMAREB: The National Independent Electoral Commission (NIEC) has officially released the comprehensive timeline for the upcoming Galmudug State elections. The announcement follows recent political negotiations that resolved outstanding tensions surrounding regional leadership and alignment with federal electoral frameworks.

According to a press statement released by the commission, the finalized schedule strictly complies with national electoral regulations, specifically citing Article 10 of the NIEC Establishment Law and Article 18 of the National Electoral Law. The commission emphasized that the structural layout of the timeline is designed to ensure maximum transparency, procedural integrity, and broad public participation.

Presidential Vote Slated for July 20 Amid High Voter Turnout

The electoral commission has officially scheduled the Galmudug presidential election to take place on July 20, 2026. Ahead of the leadership vote, electoral officials will finalize the selection and inauguration of the regional parliamentary assembly.

The commission further disclosed that voter registration targets have seen significant local engagement, with 215,860 individuals successfully enrolled and issued voting cards across the Galgaduud and Mudug regions of central Somalia. The NIEC has urged all regional stakeholders, political factions, and traditional elders to cooperate closely with electoral administrators to ensure a peaceful, transparent, and stable voting process.

Federal Realignment and Political Shift in Dhusamareb

The release of the election timeline occurs shortly after a high-level political settlement between Villa Somalia and the incumbent Galmudug administration. Sources close to the negotiations indicate that an agreement was reached with Galmudug President Ahmed Abdi Kariye (Qoor Qoor) regarding the regional transition, paving the way for the implementation of the federal government’s preferred electoral model.

The upcoming July 20 vote is expected to mark a significant political transition for the central state. The federal administration has actively supported structural reforms across federal member states to align regional governance with the national political timeline. These local transitions remain central to broader negotiations between the federal government, regional leaders, and opposition groups looking to secure a unified constitutional and electoral settlement across the country.

Reports indicate that the ruling federal political apparatus intends to back Liban Ahmed Hassan (Liban Shuluq) under the prospective framework of the national political parties system. Local residents and political observers in Galmudug are closely monitoring the unfolding security and logistical preparations as the region enters the critical parliamentary selection phase.
