The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has finally lifted the arms embargo imposed on Somalia decades ago.
On Friday, UNSC voted overwhelmingly to lift the embargo.
Fourteen out of the 15 member nations voted in favour of lifting the ban while one abstained.
Sources revealed that France was the only nation to abstain.
Last month, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud assured Somalis that the UNSC would lift the arms embargo.
Consequently, Somalia is now able to buy weapons and use them for protecting its territory.
For years, Somalia has been unable to fight Al-Shabaab properly because of lack of quality weapons and other military equipment.
